Kong Academy | Empowering Kids Through Play

Remember when fun didn’t need Wi-Fi? Or when kids could entertain themselves for hours with nothing but a stick, a bucket, and a wild imagination? Yeah, that feels like a lifetime ago. These days, screens have a sneaky way of creeping into everything, even playtime. But kids don’t need a screen to have a great time, they just need little inspiration for screen-free play. They need a few good ideas, some space to move, and a parent willing to let the mess happen.

If you’ve ever thought, “My kid can build a Minecraft castle but can’t sit still for ten minutes without a tablet,” you’re not alone. Screen-free play doesn’t mean you’re going to cut technology out entirely, it’s giving your child the chance to rediscover their creativity, independence, and confidence in the real world. That’s what we do every day at Kong Academy through our in-person camps or our online Kids Club for ages 6–11. Kids Club is a space full of screen-free play inspiration to help parents and kids find active, imaginative off-screen fun at home.

Screen-Free Play Ideas for Kids Under 10

Here are some tried-and-true (and totally fun) ways to spark play, adventure, and laughter, no screens required.

1. Treasure Hunt Adventure

Hide clues around your house or yard that lead your child from one location to the next. Add challenges between clues, like hopping on one foot or balancing for 10 seconds, to keep it active. The treasure can be anything from stickers to a snack to the glory of being crowned Master Explorer.

2. Obstacle Course Challenge

Grab pillows, chairs, tape, and whatever you have on hand. Have your child design and test an obstacle course. It builds problem-solving skills, balance, and confidence, and it’s hilarious to watch. Bonus: time each other and see who can beat the course record.

3. Animal Charades

No cards needed, just their imagination. One person acts like an animal, the others guess what animal they are. It’s silly, energetic, and perfect for kids who need to move their bodies while using their brains.

4. Shadow Tag

This twist on classic tag is perfect for sunny days. Instead of tagging each other directly, kids have to step on each other’s shadow. It keeps things moving fast and teaches awareness and strategy.

5. Mini Ninja Training

Set up a “dojo” with jumping, rolling, crawling, and balance activities. Have your child invent ninja moves or create a secret handshake at the end. At Kong Academy, movement-based play like this helps kids build coordination, focus, and emotional regulation, but to them, it’s just fun.

6. Nature Builders

Grab sticks, leaves, and rocks from the yard or a nearby park. Challenge your kids to build a fairy village, a fort, or an animal shelter. Outdoor play encourages imagination, respect for nature, and teamwork (plus, it tires them out… you’re welcome).

7. Rescue Mission!

One stuffed animal is stuck in a dangerous place (aka, the couch or under a chair). Kids have to rescue it using ropes, cushions, or creative problem-solving, without stepping in the “lava.” This one never gets old and taps into the same kind of imaginative thinking we nurture at camp.

8. Dance-Off or Freeze Dance

Play some music (bonus if it’s weird and funky) and let your kids go wild. When the music stops, they freeze! Dance helps kids express emotions, burn energy, and build body awareness, and let’s be real, it makes for great family videos.

9. The Floor Is Lava: Remix Edition

You knew it was coming. But this time, make it fresh, use different rules. Maybe the floor turns to lava every time someone says a certain word, or maybe there’s a timer and a safe base. Keep them guessing, and they’ll keep playing.

10. Story Builders

Start a story with one sentence: “Once there was a dragon who hated brushing his teeth…” Then let your kids take turns adding to it. The goal is to keep it going for as long as possible without breaking character. This game builds storytelling skills and creativity, and usually ends in giggles.

11. Sock Wars

Roll up socks into balls, divide the room into two sides, and go to battle! It’s soft, safe, and perfect for letting out big energy indoors. Add teamwork by creating mini forts or rules about who can enter each zone.

12. Spy School

Set up a “training course” where kids must sneak past imaginary lasers (red yarn or tape), decode secret messages, and move quietly to complete their mission. For bonus points, create spy names and a theme song.

13. Parachute Blanket Game

Don’t have a real parachute? No problem. Grab a sheet and toss soft toys into the center, then work together to make them bounce without falling off. It teaches cooperation and timing while giving kids a chance to laugh till they drop.

14. Camp-In

Set up a tent or blanket fort in the living room, make snacks, and tell campfire stories. You can even “roast” marshmallows in the oven. Bonus if your kids bring flashlights and make shadow puppets before bedtime.

15. Create A New Game Together

Let your child invent their own game. All they need is a few rules, a goal, and maybe a fun name. Kids love ownership and you might be surprised by what they create. This helps them develop leadership skills and confidence, which are a big part of our Kids Club adventures.

Why Screen-Free Play Matters

Screen-free play gives kids something every parent wants for them: the ability to think, move, and feel without needing outside stimulation. It strengthens creativity, focus, empathy, and resilience. And it teaches them that they are the ones who make life fun, not an app.

At Kong Academy, we see this transformation happen every day. Whether kids are climbing, crawling, laughing, or leading their team through a game, they’re learning how to solve problems, manage emotions, and build friendships, all while having a blast.

So go ahead. Put the devices away for an hour, get on the floor, and jump into the game because the best memories aren’t made behind a screen, they’re made in motion.
